Operation: Find the Floor

Operation: Find the Floor is progressing very well. I have completed phase 3 - filing, phase 4 - throwing shit out, phase 5 - boxing shit up, and phase 6 - vaccuuming. The office is now effectively usable. And mostly dust-free. I still need to make another trip to Goodwill, another trip to Ikea, and figure out a safe way to get rid of two old laptops.

I also have to unpack my car. *sob* But at least I have room to put stuff, now. Theoretically.

I get one day off in a week. This is how today has gone.

Washed hair
Went for brunch (my weekly treat)
Put on first load of laundry
Went to mall for necessities
Went grocery shopping
Put on second load of laundry
Washed dishes
Cleaned bathroom
Cleaned fridge
Mopped kitchen
Mopped bathroom
Took garbage out
Cooked dinners for the week
Cooked lunches for the week
Ate dinner
Washed more dishes
Cleaned kitchen
Folded laundry
And now I'm going to sit down and do some writing for my second job. If I'm lucky, I'll be done in time to read a little in bed before I go to sleep.

I'm going to be a pain in the ass

Hi guys,

I have some exciting news and a huge favour to ask. One of my short travel pieces has been short-listed in a writing contest. The prize is a few nights in Chicago and some money to write further pieces for them. I'm really excited about this!

The sucky part is that you have to get people to vote for you in order to make it to the last round. This is where the favour comes in. I was wondering if I could ask you all to please follow the link below and vote for me.

www.trazzler.com/trips/jardin-majorelle-in-marrakech-marrakech-tensift-el-haouz-ma

The article is very short (only 150 words) and below it is a big green button marked "save". Clicking on this is kind of like "liking" something on Facebook - you don't have to actually save it to your computer.

You DO however, have to sign up for the website. They're going to ask for an e-mail address and ask you to create an account. It's quick and painless. And once you've confirmed your e-mail address with them, you can route it all straight to your spam filter. Or if you have a junk e-mail address, feel free to use that one. If you don't go through all these steps, sadly, the votes don't count.

Some of you have done this for me already, and I am hugely grateful. If anyone else out there would be willing to help out, it would mean a lot to me.

Sorry this is such a pain in the ass.

I have a question, mostly for my writer-friends...

Anyone have any idea why I randomly received a copy of Jim Butcher's Storm Front in the mail today? I didn't order it, but it had my correct name and address on it. It was shipped from New Jersey, but had an "if undeliverable return to" address in Belgium. My dad took it down to the basement to open it, claiming it might be a bomb.

Very odd.

Fuck off with the obnoxious video ads.

We have the fireplace channel on my mom's giant TV. And I'm using youtube to play my favourite christmas carols so I don't need to listen to the eighteenth version of a choral rendition of jingle bells on the radio.

This afternoon I took my mom to see A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and it was hilarious. Very nice as a Christmas treat. And I ran into Andromakie and Elizalavelle, which was fun. I hustled around to the stage door after the show to give my friend a hug, and then we came home and hunkered down for the evening.

All the presents are wrapped and under the tree. The house and tree are decorated. My siblings came over for the evening and at no point was it necessary for me to kill my sister, which was a pleasant change.

When my mom gets back from dropping my sister at home, we're going to watch the Muppet Family Christmas, the one I remember from when I was little, where they all go to Fozzie's mom's place for Christmas, and the fraggles and the Sesame Street muppets show up as well. That just blew my little seven-year-old mind.

Tonight, after I go to bed, my mom will stuff the stockings and lay out the presents from Santa. Then, after SHE goes to bed, I will go out and stuff HER stocking and put out her present from Santa. (I have been a secondary Santa in my house since my mom split from my step-dad and there was no one else to stuff her stocking. I enjoy it, though. I am the spirit of christmas in our house.)

Tomorrow morning, my brother and sister and my dad will come over and we'll open presents, have a traditional English breakfast, call the relatives in the UK, then start cooking. Dinner in the afternoon with all the family plus my brother's girlfriend (who is awesome) and maybe Stewart, too.

Happy holidays everyone!

I took a couple of days away from my nano story, just because I could. And, actually, a few more days to let it settle might not be the worst thing. But I printed it out tonight. My 50,000 words ended up being 81 pages, single-spaced. I've never written 50,000 words of any one thing before, and holding the giant wodge of paper in my hand, getting to show it off to my dad and proclaim "I wrote this" was a very, very cool feeling.

In reality, it's more a collection of notes and ideas than even a real draft. But it's also an accomplishment. Tomorrow, I'll sit with it and start trying to build a proper outline.

This post started as a response to this blog post, but it got long so I thought I'd spare the strangers my navel gazing and inflict it on my friends instead.

This is my first year doing NaNo. It's something I've wanted to try for a while, and this year worked well, because my job wasn't going to get in the way. It has been an interesting exercise.

I think, on the whole, I'm more of a bricklayer. (Go read the blog post and that last sentence will make sense.) But, I tend to write in waves. I'll write a chunk one day, and then the next I'll go back over that, tweak it and then keep going. And the next day, I'll go back over all of it, tweak, etc. The downside is, I very rarely ever finish anything.

NaNo has been helpful in a lot of ways. It has forced me to put stuff down on paper, and has led to a better understanding of the plot, a better understanding of the characters. And I've written 27,000 words so far, which is probably the longest single thing I've ever done. At least half of it is garbage, but then, about half of it isn't, so that's something.

The problem I'm running into is, at its root, that I picked a story I care about. It has helped motivate me to keep going, but it has also made it very hard to silence my inner editor. I have a very hard time just spewing out wordage. After more than a decade of pecking at the idea, I now have 27,000 words towards it, and a much better idea of where it's going. But I have also hit the point where all I want to do is go back to the beginning and start to fix things. I really, really need to do that. But, I also really want to see NaNo through to the end. I could just keep going, get a rough shape for what's next, get more good ideas, but I also feel like I'm wandering further and further off the path. And the writing is therefore starting to feel like much more of a chore.

I haven't given up, yet. We'll see how it goes. Regardless, though, I feel like I now have enough of a base in the story to start writing it properly once NaNo is over.
